How Much Does a Dentist Cost in Cape Town? (2025 Price Guide)
It's one of the questions we hear most often at The Dental People: "How much is this going to cost me?" And it's a completely fair question. Dental fees in Cape Town can vary enormously depending on where you go, whether you're on a medical aid, and what treatment you actually need.
As a practice built on transparency, we think patients deserve straight answers. So here's an honest breakdown of what dental care typically costs in Cape Town in 2025 — and how to make sure you're not overpaying.
Why Do Dental Prices Vary So Much?
Before we get to numbers, it helps to understand why dental fees differ so widely across Cape Town practices. There are a few main factors at play.
Medical aid billing vs. cash rates. Practices that bill medical aids must follow fixed tariff codes and reimbursement rates, which keeps prices higher. Cash-based clinics like ours set our own fees, allowing many treatments to be 20-40% cheaper than equivalent procedures billed through medical aids. Medical-aid billing also adds significant administrative work and delays. Verifying coverage, submitting claims, and chasing reimbursements increases overhead - and patients sometimes lack coverage or funds, leading to late or unpaid accounts. Those collection costs and bad debts drive up overall prices. By using a cash-pricing model, we reduce administration and financial risk and pass those savings on to patients with lower, clearer fees and faster care.
Location and overheads. A practice in the V&A Waterfront or Constantia carries very different rental costs to one in Milnerton. Those overheads get passed on to patients.
Specialist vs. general dentist. Seeing a prosthodontist or periodontist for a specialist procedure will cost more than seeing a general dentist for the same issue. For many routine treatments, a skilled general dentist delivers identical outcomes at a lower price.
Dental equipment and materials. Providing high-quality dental care requires significant investment in both capital equipment and ongoing consumables. Major items like dental chairs, digital X-rays, intraoral scanners, CAD/CAM units and sterilisation equipment carry high upfront costs plus maintenance, insurance and depreciation. These costs can run into the millions of rand for new practices. Everyday consumables - gloves, burs, impression materials, restorative composites, anaesthetics and lab-fabricated restorations-are recurring expenses, and using premium materials or outsourcing to quality laboratories increases costs further.
Typical Dental Costs in Cape Town (2025)
The figures below are general market ranges for Cape Town. Our rates at The Dental People typically sit toward the lower end of these ranges.
Consultation / Check-up
A standard examination with a general dentist in Cape Town typically ranges from R350 to R700. This usually includes a visual examination and basic advice, but not X-rays or cleaning.
Professional Teeth Cleaning (Scale & Polish)
A full professional cleaning (scale and polish) typically costs between R900 and R1,700 depending on the amount of buildup and whether the hygienist spends additional time on gum care. We recommend a clean every six months - catching gum disease early saves you significantly more down the line.
Tooth Fillings
Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings generally cost between R950 and R1,800 per tooth, depending on the size of the cavity and how many surfaces are involved. Larger cavities that have been left untreated cost more to fill - another reason early check-ups pay for themselves.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal fees in Cape Town range quite widely: typically R2,500 to R6,000+ for a general dentist, and higher for a specialist endodontist. The variation depends on which tooth is being treated (front teeth have fewer canals than molars) and the complexity of the case. At The Dental People, root canals are performed by Dr. Naidoo at cash rates, making this one of the most affordable options in the greater Cape Town area.
Tooth Extraction
A simple extraction typically costs R800 to R1,200. Surgical extractions (including impacted wisdom teeth) can range from R1,500 to R4,000+ depending on complexity.
Teeth Whitening
Professional in-practice whitening in Cape Town generally runs between R2,800 and R4,500. Be cautious of very cheap alternatives - over-the-counter strips and unregulated "whitening bars" can damage enamel and produce uneven results. Professional treatment is supervised, uses clinically appropriate concentrations, and lasts far longer.
Does Medical Aid Cover Dental Costs?
This depends heavily on your plan. Most South African medical aids provide some dental cover, but the devil is in the detail. Discovery Health, for example, covers certain preventative treatments (like two cleans per year on some plans) from your risk benefits, while other procedures come out of your day-to-day savings account.
The important thing to understand is that being on a medical aid doesn't automatically mean your dental treatment is free or even cheap. If your savings account is depleted, you'll pay out of pocket at the practice's standard rate - which at many practices is the full medical aid tariff rate. At The Dental People, even if you're paying out of pocket, our cash pricing still applies, which can represent a meaningful saving.
We currently accept patients on selected plans from Discovery Health, GEMS, and Profmed. Please contact us before your appointment to confirm your benefits.
How to Avoid Overpaying for Dental Care in Cape Town
A few practical tips from Dr. Naidoo:
Don't delay. A small cavity costs a few hundred rands to fill. Left for a year, it may need a root canal and crown - a difference of thousands. The most expensive dental work is always the work that could have been prevented.
Ask for a treatment plan upfront. Any reputable dentist should give you a written quote before starting treatment. At The Dental People, we don't begin work without your informed consent and a clear understanding of costs.
Consider a cash-based practice. Cash practices have leaner overheads and are not bound by medical aid tariffs. This flexibility often translates directly into lower prices for patients - without any compromise on the quality of materials or clinical care.
Prioritise prevention. Two check-ups and cleans per year is genuinely the cheapest dental investment you can make. It costs a fraction of restorative work and keeps small problems from becoming expensive ones.
What Makes The Dental People Different?
We opened in Milnerton because we saw a gap: Cape Town patients were either paying a premium for quality, or compromising on quality to save money. We don't think those should be the only two options.
Our cash rates sit 20–40% below standard medical aid tariffs. We don't upsell unnecessary treatment. We give every patient a clear treatment plan before we start. And our emergency line is open until 18:30 on weekdays for patients who can't take time off work during standard hours.
We believe dental care should be honest, accessible, and fairly priced. That's it.
