Your Teeth Want 1,000 Points.
So Does Your Vitality Status.
A once-a-year dental check-up earns you 1,000 Discovery Vitality points - and costs less than you think. Here's everything you need to know.

You're leaving points on the table
If you're a Discovery Vitality member, your annual dental check-up is worth 1,000 Vitality points - points that contribute directly to your Vitality status and unlock real rewards like gym discounts, HealthyCare cash-back at Clicks and Dis-Chem, and travel benefits.
And yet, most Vitality members never claim them. Not because they don't want to - but because nobody told them how easy it is, or how affordable it can be.
This article is for you.
Why your oral health is part of your overall health
Discovery's Vitality programme is built on a well-established body of research: your lifestyle choices directly impact your health outcomes. Dental health is no exception. The World Health Organization recognises oral disease as a major global health burden, and research consistently links poor oral health to serious systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
That's not a scare tactic — it's the reason Discovery includes a dental check-up in the Vitality points structure. Catching a small cavity early, or identifying early-stage gum disease, can genuinely save you from far more complex (and costly) treatment down the line.
The South African Dental Association (SADA) recommends a professional dental examination at least once a year for most adults. The Vitality programme simply makes it rewarding to follow that advice.
What's included in a dental check-up visit
When you come in for your annual Vitality check-up at The Dental People, here's what we cover:
Comprehensive oral examination
Periodontal (gum) screening and charting
Fluoride application
Personalised oral hygiene advice
Bitewing X-rays (×2) to detect decay between teeth
Professional scale and polish
Oral cancer screening
Infection control (sterile instruments, barrier techniques)
We submit your claim electronically with the correct SADA procedure codes and ICD-10 diagnosis codes (Z01.2 — Dental examination) so that your Discovery claim processes smoothly and your Vitality points are awarded without delay.
How does Discovery pay for this?
This is where a lot of people get confused — and where we can help you understand what comes out of your pocket.
For most Discovery plans, basic dental treatment is paid from your Medical Savings Account (MSA). If your MSA has funds available, Discovery pays the claim at the Discovery Health Rate (DHR) — and you pay nothing extra, because we charge at or near that rate.
On Executive, Comprehensive, and Priority plans, basic dental treatment has no overall annual limit, as long as MSA funds are available. On Core plans, dental treatment is paid from pocket, but the Vitality points are still yours to earn.
Not sure which plan you're on or what you're covered for? The quickest way is to check the Discovery member portal or call Discovery on 0860 99 88 77.
How to book and claim your points
Book your appointment
Contact The Dental People to schedule your annual check-up. Let us know you're a Discovery Vitality member when you book so we can set aside the right appointment time.
Bring your Discovery card and ID
We need your membership number to submit your claim correctly. Your ID confirms your identity for scheme purposes.
We handle the claim
We submit your account electronically to Discovery with all the correct codes. If you're on a Discovery Health-administered plan, your Vitality points are awarded automatically once the claim is processed.
Points not appearing? Submit manually
If you're on a Discovery Life policy (not a medical scheme), you'll need to claim your Vitality points manually on the Discovery website. It takes about two minutes.
We're here for patients who've been putting this off
At The Dental People, we know that for many people, a dental visit feels like something to delay rather than look forward to. We've built our practice around changing that — affordable pricing, no judgement, and a team that genuinely enjoys making you feel at ease.
Your annual check-up is the single lowest-stakes dental visit you'll have. No drills. No surprises. Just a thorough look, a clean, and a reason to leave feeling good about your health — and your Vitality status.
We're based at 1 Loxton Road, Centre Point Shopping Centre, Milnerton, Cape Town — easy to reach from Milnerton, Blouberg, Edgemead, and the Northern Suburbs.

VITALITY POINTS AT A GLANCE
Discovery Vitality members 18 years and older can earn up to 1,000 Vitality points for completing one dental health check per year. If you're on a Discovery Health Medical Scheme plan that covers dentistry, your points are awarded automatically once your claim is processed — no manual submission required.
On the Smart Plans (Classic Smart and Essential Smart), Discovery covers one defined dental check-up per member per year — including a consultation, two bitewing X-rays, scale and polish, and fluoride — with a fixed co-payment of R125 (Classic Smart) or R190 (Essential Smart). That's your total out-of-pocket cost for the visit.
